The Court of Protection is an office of the Supreme Court and exists to protect the property and affairs of people who due to mental disorder are incapable of managing their own financial and property affairs.
Where a person lacks the requisite mental capacity to appoint someone to act on his or her behalf in relation to their affairs then an application can be made to the Court of Protection for an appointment of another as a Deputy. The Deputy will handle the day to day running of the incapacitated person in much the same way as an Attorney appointed under a power of attorney. However the court will make specific directions for the Deputy to adhere to and the Deputy must ensure at all times the directions are carried out.
